Collective thinking and engagement around Community-Based Adaptation: Creating a shared global community

Over the last several years there has been a growing interest in Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) to climate change in the developing countries, which has led to a significant and growing number of actions on the ground by NGOs and research organizations. Many of these institutions have been exploring the possibilities of linking efforts in order to achieve a greater level of synergy around CBA.

As part of this collective thinking, the Global Initiative on Community-Based Adaptation (GICBA) has been initiated in response to a growing interest in CBA approaches and strategies to climate change in developing countries. This proposed initiative is not meant to take the place of or compete with other projects or activities but to enable sharing and synergies between efforts by all organisations (and individuals) working on community-based adaptation to climate change.

To enhance this joint approach and thinking, a series of International Conferences on CBA issues have been held in Bangladesh and Tanzania. Other collaborative initiatives include:

- The weADAPT-Google Earth Community Based Adaptation Layer is a space where you can share your adaptation projects.  The Adaptation layer allows others to know about ongoing initiatives - it visually presents who is doing what and where. You can add projects to the Community Based Adaptation Layer by watching this short tutorial.

You can add longer articles about your projects to the GICBA Knowledge Base by going to the 'How do I contribute?' section here and link them to the Adaptation Layer.

To become part of this community and create your own personal profile, please register here.

- The  CBA-Exchange (CBAX) website, which is a dedicated online space for practitioners, researchers and policy advisors to engage with each other and learn more about and share CBA initiatives, research and news. Please join, engage and share CBA resources, experiences and commentary with your colleagues and peers from across the globe.

What are the objectives of GICBA?

- Promote CBA to climate change nationally and globally

- Generate and share evidence based research and experience on CBA to climate change

- Create a community of practice with strong learning elements through the Community based adaptation exchange (CBAX) website.

- Support the series of International Conferences on CBA to climate change (held in Bangladesh every second year)

- To strengthen the capacity of all stakeholders to support efforts at designing, implementing and scaling up CBA to climate change activities

- To support mainstreaming CBA into local and national development planning
