In the Guadalquivir basin, in the southern part of Spain, agriculture is a key economic sector. The region grows a wide range of crops, from cereals, oil seeds, sugar-beet and cotton, to varied fruits and horticulture products and olives. However, this highly productive land and its dependant socio-economic structure (this region has the second largest share of agricultural employment in Spain) will be threatened by climate change impacts on water availability and frequency of extreme events such as drought.

The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement no. 244012
