Job Opening: Chief Economist (World Resources Institute)

WRI (World Resources Institute) is searching for a Chief Economist to lead a global economic transition toward more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development. This is a brand new leadership role designed to embed economic systems thinking into all of WRI’s work—from energy and cities to land, food, and water.

As Chief Economist, you’ll develop frameworks to guide countries on how to grow green, build teams of economists across WRI country offices, and help reimagine macroeconomic systems through a climate, nature, and equity lens.

🔍 About the Role:

  • Guide global thought leadership on inclusive green growth, economic resilience, and just transitions
  • Integrate economic strategy into human systems transformation (cities, food, energy)
  • Build a world-class economic function across WRI offices and programs
  • Represent WRI in high-level forums (G20, MDBs, UNFCCC, COP, etc.)
  • Collaborate with senior leaders and advise on economic priorities across regions and programs

🧠 Ideal Profile:

  • Advanced degree in Economics, Environmental or Development Economics
  • 20+ years’ experience in economic policy, research, or advising
  • Proven leadership in global economic transformation, ideally with a strong climate and equity lens
  • Expertise in macro-economic policy, trade, fiscal systems, and green incentives
  • Track record in managing multidisciplinary teams and complex programs
  • Experience with Emerging and Developing Economies

📍 Logistics:

  • Location: Hybrid, based in one of WRI’s offices: US, UK, NL, India, Indonesia, China, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Rwanda, Kenya, or Ethiopia
  • In-office: 8 days/month
  • Contract: Full-time, senior role
  • Salary: Competitive and location-specific (e.g., $192–230K in the U.S.)
