Conditions of applicability
It is clear that there is no ‘one tool fits all’ solution when assessing climate adaptation and different tools and methods are appropriate for different parts of the process. For example, the scale at which the analysis is taking place will be one factor to consider when deciding which tool to apply.
Similarly, the types of data available may be a determining factor when choosing a tool. On the other hand, the type of analysis and output that is desired (more qualitative or more quantitative) may be the deciding factor.
And, linked to this, it may be the level of engagement that is available or desired that is more important in determining the approach used.
It is also important to think about the goal you are trying to achieve before deciding on a tool, to see if it matches your objectives. See this table for a selection of tools and their goals.
