Building Resilience Amongst Communities in Europe (emBRACE): Understanding Community Disaster Resilience

Introduction

This animation was developed during the EU FP7 project emBRACE (Building Resilience Amongst Communities in Europe). This project (which ran from 2011-2015) explored community disaster resilience (CDR) in the context of a range of natural hazards that occur across Europe. A key project output was a unified framework for understanding the CDR concept. The framework identifies important components of community disaster resilience, including: access to a diversity of resources and capacities (e.g. socio-political, financial, physical, and human); the capability to act effectively in the mitigation of risks and impacts; mutual learning; and collaboration. Further, for disaster risk planning and management, the framework clearly illustrates the importance of understanding local contexts, including local civil and social protection practices and institutions.

This animation visualises and explains the key components of the emBRACE framework in a way that illustrates its potential utility as a tool through which organisations responsible for Disaster Risk Reduction and other stakeholders might wish to better understand CDR processes in their own communities.
