From vulnerability assessment to adaptation planning

The process of vulnerability assessment provides you with an understanding of key areas which are particularly sensitive to climate change and need to be addressed. The next question is how to move from identification of vulnerabilities to developing and choosing practical adaptation options. Several other initiatives in weADAPT provide useful guidance on this process:Using Climate InformationA key part of developing an adaptation strategy is to ensure that it will not be undermined by changes in climate. There is a large amount of uncertainty associated with climate model projections, and projections vary depending on the model which is used. Therefore it is necessary to assess how adaptation options perform against projections from several different models in order to choose strategies which are robust against a range of possible futures. This is another way of saying that we want to choose the options which are least affected by the fact that we don’t know exactly how the climate will change. The ‘Using Climate Information’ initiative provides content to help you assess the extent to which an adaptation option addresses likely changes in climate, including guidance articles, links to data resources, and ultimately case studies documenting how similar analyses have been undertaken by other weADAPT partners.Adaptation Decision-MakingThere are many different ways to assess adaptation options and choose between them, and an increasingly large number of tools and methods which have been developed to do this. The adaptation decision-making initiative aims to give an overview of this landscape of tools, the key principles of choosing adaptation options and links to practical tools which you can use in order to develop and prioritise your adaptation strategies. We are keen to know which adaptation methods you find useful, so that future users can benefit from practical feedback based on your experience of using different tools. If you want to share your thoughts on the use of different tools, in particular if you have found something to be particularly helpful, or conversely if a tool did not work well, then please do so from this link.Climate Risk CommunicationHaving identified key vulnerabilities during the vulnerability assessment there is probably a need to communicate this to other people who might benefit from the information. The set of articles and resources on climate risk communication gives a step-by-step account of the process of developing a risk communication strategy, and includes lessons learned and case studies from a series of projects implemented under the ACCCA programme.
