Basma Sobhi Khalil
Basma, a professional water engineer specialized in EIAs, Environmental management & climate change mitigation and adaptation programs and strategies. After my bachelor’s degree in Water and Environmental Engineering in 2014 from Cairo University, I went on to earn my master’s degree in 2019 from York University-Canada in Civil and Environmental Engineering specialized in biological energy efficient wastewater treatment. I have a demonstrated history of working in higher education as TA&RA for 2 years with strong research skills. I always had a passion for climate action and working with communities at risk and vulnerable groups ever since my undergrad studies. That’s why I worked as an environmental & climate change consultant for more than 5 years in a top environmental consultancy with multilateral organizations for Strategic Regional Environmental & Climate Projects. Currently, I hold the position of Senior Climate Change Officer in the Center for Applied Research on Environment and Sustainability at American University in Cairo (AUC CARES), where I'm managing a Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration and Community Participatory Model focusing on nature-based climate change solutions.
As a young manager in environmental field, I want to be part of the climate leadership in the MENA region, and have the proper tools & resources to do so by networking with fellow professionals, and gain experience by working in places that will give me broader experience and knowledge about the field and access to policy makers and changers. I'm looking for the right exposure, network of fellow climate advocates and enthusiasts of shared values and principles coming from diverse backgrounds and fields which will help broaden my experience and give me the mentorship I need for my career path.
Being a young woman in leadership will also help me reach out and be the voice of vulnerable communities in my country. Being an African woman, that places a bigger role on me to represent minorities and women & give them a sense of ownership, so I want be a part of the climate talk going on, on behalf of fellow young women, and allow for more inclusivity of color, race and faith in climate leadership and adaptation in the region.
