Senior Research Fellow
I am an environmental anthropologist, senior research fellow at the Center for Political Ecology (Santa Cruz, CA) and, a former advisor to UNESCO-IHP on water and cultural diversity and the Marshall Islands Nuclear Claims Trbunal on the human and environmental impact of nuclear fallout. My work focuses on human rights and the environment, especially the synergistic relationship between biodiversity and cultural diversity, consequential damages of dysfunctional governance that prioritizes short-term economic gain over longterm sustainability, and the increasing inability to sustain the human and environmental right to a healthy life. Recent work explores the consequential damages of nuclear power and hydrodevelopment -- both industries have generated profound global environmental changes, with local and global consequences. I advocate the use of holistic transdisciplinary approaches to assess consequential damages, to recognize and explore the efficacy of adpative response (including resurgent use of traditional knowledge), and to document the global impact of emerging trends in energy transitions. I believe biocultural health to be the strongest indicator of sustainability.
