Programme Coordinator
I work with an NGO working with social enterprise/smallholder agriculture cooperatives in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria whose members are democratically elected. Members of the cooperatives exercise substantial power and take part in decisions which affect the material, social, economic, cultural and political conditions of their day to day existence. Most of the cooperative members who live and work in rural and isolated communities combine artisanal oil palm cultivation/harvesting and processing with food crop production, free range livestock raising and the capture of wild fish stocks from the immensely resource rich creeks and streams surrounding Akwa Ibom State. CENGOS provide these cooperatives with necessary support to grow oil palms and food crops and improve their bargaining power and is currently working to develop a strategy aimed at mainstreaming gender and environmental concerns as well as a project to limit the effect of HIV/AIDS in communities which we work. Currently, these farmers have limited knowledge of good agronomic and management practices resulting in low farm productivity and market competitiveness and need help by way of technical and funding assistance, information exchanges from organisations and institutions working in the field of smallholder agricultural development, institutional capacity building, management information systems development, project designs and management likely to be willing with us.
