I am working on the values and ethics underlying water management choices. Since a big part of climate adaptation will be through the way we manage water, making good decisions about water use, river protection, flood management strategies, aquifer management, etc, will become increasingly critical. And since the motivations to those decisions are largely determined by the values we hold, a clear understanding of our values, is fundamental to good decision-making. Rather surprisingly, however, those values are rarely studied, so we go on making decisions without really analyzing our motives. This kind of sloppy decision making is never a good idea, but when the stakes are higher, as they are becoming with the changing climate, sloppy decision making should be considered "unethical" in the same category as financial corruption.
