Resilience Consultant
Bern Hoffmann is an expert in education and curriculum development with deep knowledge in environmental studies, and capacity development for resilience to climate change impacts. He has taught the entire age spectrum from youth to adult in classroom, field, domestic and international contexts over the last 23 years. Drawing on advanced degrees in education and natural resources along with eight years experience as a Director of Sustainability, he has become a trusted capacity development consultant to those who want to strengthen their community’s resilience to direct and indirect impacts from climate change.
In the last eight years, Bern’s work as the Director of Sustainability at The Potomac School, was marked by leading successful collaborative efforts that resulted in the creation of, and capacity development support for: two new campus-wide waste streams; two campus-wide land conservation initiatives; a campus-wide stormwater mitigation initiative; new environmental curriculum across K-12 grade levels; and a faculty and staff retreat using peer-learning methods that was the first of its kind at the school.
Most recently, Bern has been engaged in consulting work related to capacity building for climate resilience in Northern Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, as well as internationally in Morocco and Turkey.
Bern has honed his ability to simplify and convey complex ideas to a diverse range of people as well as his ability to synthesize creative solutions to problems. Bern’s broad experience as an educator has led him to coach/mentor world class skydivers; teach English as a second language to college level students and adults while living overseas in Thailand; as well as work with children with learning disabilities in the Florida public school system.
