Capacity development consultant
I've basically been involved in the adoption of participatory approaches in various contexts over the past 24 years. It's been a fantastic learning journey, and I've had the good fortune of working with a wide range of people and institutions home and abroad. This interaction has taken me into various fields and topics, ranging from rural and agriculture development to urban rehabilitation, from natural resource management and wildlife conservation to capacity development for refugees, and from children's participation to community-based health initiatives.
My only valid excuse for indulging in such varied topics is that my contribution has almost always been complementary to a core working group or team specialized in the topic at hand. In fact, maybe only now can I claim, with any clarity, to understand the type of role I should be playing in participatory processes of learning and change. Big-headed as it may sound, I like to believe that I can be a useful coach/companion for groups and teams that are committed to applying participatory approaches to their work and to their organizational structures and procedures.
I cannot overstate the influence of some wonderful individuals on my career and professional attitude, and I'm privileged that some of the working relationships that I have been part of have endured the test of time. These are the type of professional bonds that make one optimistic that the learning will continue, in spite of, or sometimes because of, all the challenges.
