Captain Tim Forderer, was awarded the YachtAid Global Humanitarian Award in April 2017. After several circumnavigations of the globe during his 11-years as Captain of S/Y VIVID, Tim dedicated a year in volunteer service as the Executive Director of YachtAid Global, the premier yachting community non-profit.
He combines his extensive experience as a superyacht captain with the organizational and leadership skills gained from previously working with a wireless service provider. During circumnavigations, he has acquired valuable insight and empathy for the challenges facing different coastal communities and also became acquainted with a powerful network of global changemakers.
During Tim’s time as YachtAid Global’s Executive Director, he was instrumental in organizing and leading the yachting community’s response to the Caribbean islands when they were ravaged by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, in 2017.
In coordinating NGOs, government ministries and the yachting community, YachtAid Global delivered targeted aid to the 15 affected Caribbean islands. Forty-four superyachts arrived laden with relief items. With over 750 crew members and thousands of volunteers, this effort was the first time the power of the superyacht industry had been harnessed.
“Do what you love and do some good along the way.” For over a decade Captain Tim has followed this mantra by getting authentically involved in the small island and coastal communities he sailed into. Delivering school, health care supplies, and drinking water filter installations, Tim also gave inspirational talks, “Do What You Love,” to young adults.
Tim’s time spent with young people in coastal communities around the world led him to partner with The Wonderment, created by Kidnected World, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. At TheWonderment, kids can explore, share, and collaborate creatively on a global level.
According to Tim, “We all want today's younger generation to grow into people that can make the world a better place. We are faced with complex and overwhelming issues and can create a new generation of people capable of solving what our generation has not seemed to manage.”
Tim is currently convening a collaborative group to initiate a grassroots, global movement of students and emerging impact leaders who want to use their skills to make a positive impact for their small island communities and all people and the planet.
