Guanaco and trees at dawn

We are an NGO based in central Chile working towards socio-ecological rewilding of the region. This means rewilding that welcomes human presence in rewilded areas, seeing humans and their livelihoods as part of the ecosystem that we are trying to restore. We currently focus on reintroducing guanacos (Lama guanaco) to central Chile, which are a native species that previously appeared to play important ecological roles structuring the landscape, and is likely to have had ecological impacts positively benefiting many elements of biodiversity and productivity. On the one had we work with private land owners and protected areas to reintroduce guanacos, with the aim of forming corridors across which guanaco populations can move. On the other hand, we work with communities to valorise their local ecological knowledge and address their concerns about adapting to changing climatic, environmental and social conditions, and how rewilding might affect this. As there is little scientific background data to work with in designing our projects, we also conduct research on woodland ecology, guanaco behaviour, local ecological knowledge, and ecological impacts of traditional livelihood practices.
