Lun YIN

Dr. Lun YIN is Ethno-Ecologist of Bai ethnic minority background in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. Dr. Lun YIN received his M.A. in Social Anthropology Studies at the Ecole Des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociale in Paris, and PhD in Minzu University of China in Beijing. He is Professor of the Southwest Forestry University in China, Branch Director of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences – Ecology and Nature Conservation. Dr. Lun YIN’s major field of interests is the Indigenous Knowledge among the mountain ethnic groups in Yunnan which links with watershed management, environment and biodiversity, his work is dedicated to the adaptation and resilience of climate change in support of sustainable livelihoods of the mountain indigenous peoples in Yunnan province and Eastern Himalaya Mountain, China. He undertakes action and scientific research together with indigenous people’s communities which focus on climate change, and in partnership with other governmental, non-governmental and research agencies, and is committed to serving as a bridge between local communities and policy makers in order to improve decision-making that affects climate change adaption and biodiversity conservation. In 2017, Dr. Lun YIN was invited to participate in the live broadcast of "24-hour global climate reality" held by Mr. Gore, former vice president of the United States, and introduced his activities based on traditional knowledge to cope with climate change in the eastern Himalayas. Dr. Lun YIN has a strong background in the research of Indigenous Knowledge and climate change, biodiversity of eastern Himalayan mountain ethnic groups and is the programme leader of several sustainable livelihood development work programs. In 2007, with the support of UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre, Dr. Lun YIN carried out the research project “Impacts of Climate Change on Traditional Livelihoods and Adaptation of Local Tibetan Peoples in Northwest Yunnan.” In 2008, with the support of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research, Dr. Lun YIN implemented the project “Climate Change in Eastern Himalayas: Community-based advancing Scientific Capacity to Support Climate Change Adaptation”:

Dr. Lun YIN has been awarded the World Bank China Development Market Association Innovation Award in 2008.
Dr. Lun YIN’s project "Climate Change and Traditional Knowledge" was selected in the 2nd edition of Paris Peace Forum in November 2019. The project has been selected among 800 applications to be showcased in the Paris Peace Forum, to be held in November. French President Marcron initiated the Paris Peace Forum. In November 2020, Dr. Lun YIN’s project “Gender-based Solutions to Improve the Climate Change Adaption and Global Governance” was selected again in the 3rd edition of Paris Peace Forum. The project has been selected among more than 850 applications around the world to be a presentation in the Paris Peace Forum.

In august 2020, Dr. Lun YIN has been invite as the featured plenary speaker to participate the 2020 VIRTUAL NATIONAL TRIBAL & INDIGENOUS CLIMATE CONFERENCE at September 14-17, 2020. The topic is “How Tribes/Indigenous Peoples can lead the way in the field of climate change beyond this pandemic.” The audience is global Tribal and Indigenous Peoples. There are about 1200 participants from 57 different countries.

In 2013, Dr. Lun YIN is nominated by The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Technical Support Unit for Indigenous and Local Knowledge UNESCO-LINKS to participate the International expert and stakeholder workshop on the "Contribution of Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems to IPBES: Building Synergies with Science". In 2019, Dr. Lun YIN is nominated by The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Technical Support Unit for Indigenous and Local Knowledge UNESCO-LINKS as the expert to assist with the assessment on “diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature”.

Indigenous Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR): One of the original Indigenous RIA (Risk, Interpretation, and Action) Fellows from a decade ago, Dr. Lun YIN, talking about how traditional knowledge can play a leading role in climate action. Dr. Lun YIN studied the sacred mountain beliefs of Tibetan peoples, particularly the link between culture and ecology. Dr. Lun YIN helped found schools to educate about climate change, and currently assists indigenous villagers with backyard planting and ecosystem conservation.

In 2020, Dr. Lun YIN will publish his book “Climate Change and Traditional Knowledge: Community Based Adaption in Eastern Himalayas” in Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In 2007, Dr. Lun YIN was selected as a fellow to participate International training on Itergrated Water Resource Management of Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). In 2009, Dr. Lun YIN was selected as a fellow by the Chevening programme of British. In 2013, Dr. Lun YIN was selected as a World Social Science Fellow on the interdisciplinary World Social Science Seminar on Risk Interpretation and Action: Decision-making under conditions of uncertainty of International Social Science Council (ISSC). In 2020, Dr. Lun YIN was selected as a fellow to participate the Blue Pioneers Program (BPP) 2020 Accelerator in Santa Cruz, University of California, as an innovators and leader in ocean conservation.
