I am currently working on the Promoting Adaptation to Changing Coasts project, which is supported by Interreg and led by the Environment Agency. The project has two arms - the Lower Otter Restoration Project in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, and the Saane Valley project in Normandy. Both schemes, currently underway, are managed realignments of historically altered river estuaries, aiming to preempt likely effects of climate change. In total,100 hectares of inter-tidal saltmarsh and mudflats will be created, forming carbon sinks and attracting wading birds, as well as, it is hoped, increasing well-being for local residents and increasing green tourism. Both areas have flooded in recent years. In Devon, work includes moving a cricket club, building a new road and breaking through a man-made embankment, while in France, a campsite is to be relocated and a new water treatment works built.
