Professor E. Emerhi is a forester specializing in sustainable natural resources development and environmental management issues. With over thirty-five years of field and academic experience, including conducting and supervising environmental sector projects, facilitating relations between private and public-sector organizations, and preparing sustainable development business plans, she brings an in-depth analytical and programmatic expertise to the projects she is involved in. She has planned, designed, and executed environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for field development projects in the oil and gas sector and past clients have included a wide range of major oil and gas production and service companies, state government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. She has been a special adviser on EIA to the Ministries of Environment in the Niger Delta region (Nigeria) and a lecturer and a resource expert at numerous environmental conferences, workshops, and seminars across Nigeria and internationally. She is currently a lecturer in the Faculty of Environmental Management, Department of Biodiversity in the Nigeria Maritime University, Kurutie Campus, Delta State, Nigeria and is a member of the Forestry Association of Nigeria (FAN), the First Vice President of the Forest and Forest Products Society(FFPS) and Chief Research Officer of the International Institute for Mangrove Research in Nigeria, which she founded in 1986.
A serial entrepreneur and keen business woman, Professor Emerhi has founded numerous businesses and organizations; she is the founder and National President of International Association for Impact Assessment, Nigerian Affiliate (IAIA-Nigeria), founded in 1998, whose registered members presently number some 700 in state chapters across Nigeria. IAIA-Nigeria is rapidly gaining recognition as a key partner in the Niger Delta region’s sustainable development goals and initiatives; founder and Chief Executive Officer of Opulence Environmental Services Limited, an environmental company providing environmental, institutional, and eco-engineering expertise for re-vegetating and restructuring of the mangrove ecosystems degraded by oil and gas exploration and production in the Niger Delta, and for combating desertification in Northern Nigeria; co-founder and Chief Research Officer for Psycho-Morphological Learning Exchange Network (PLEN), which is dedicated to crisis management and conflict reduction among Niger Delta communities. She is currently involved in the social impact assessment of HIV/AIDS in the Niger Delta, environmental management as a source of youth employment, and the Niger Delta Project, an international collaboration to promote “equity, prosperity, and tranquility” in the region.
She was one of the investigators of an environmental and social risk assessment of the Lake Chad ecosystem for the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Global Environment Facility in 2012. In the same year she co-organized a tour on “Comparing Wetlands: The Florida Everglades and the Niger Delta” for the Presidential Monitoring Committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and while at the Delta State University, she worked on the twinning of Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria with Delta State University Mississippi, United Sates of America after the conference in 2003, on the Dredging of the Niger held in New Orleans, which she co-organized with the World Bank, the Army Core of Engineers, The Tulane University, NDDC, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and Niger Republic.
Professor Emerhi is presently working with UNDP and GEF on mainstreaming gender issues in the Niger Delta Biodiversity Project focusing on women issues. She is dedicated to women’s education, empowerment, and development, and researches on issues that affect women such as human trafficking, sex tourism, prostitution and illegal migration, female circumcision and the rights of widows in Nigeria. These achievements have gained her a reputation for providing sound scientific information for both private and public sectors and for promoting constructive dialogues and partnerships on contentious issues throughout the Niger Delta region.
