I work at Faculty of Science and Engineering (SEF) at Queensland University of technology, Brisbane engaged in the Research, Development and Training on Freshwater prawn culture, Tilapia and other species with a strong focus on developing improved culture lines for the last 2 decades in the Asia Pacific region. Based on my extensive expertise in hatchery technologies, fish breeding and nutrition and in collaboration with donors and partner institutes and governments, as a group we have made significant contributions in the field of genetics and stock improvement of giant freshwater prawn and tilapia husbandry. Also as part of QUT team we have secured research project funding, and collaborated with international research partners in Fiji, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Wallis & Futuna, Cook Islands, Nauru etc., benefitting local aquaculture industries there. We have as team demonstrated the ability to translate research into practical outcomes and have been instrumental in the development of freshwater prawn and tilapia culture industry in Fiji.
My work has involved collaborations with international government and research agencies and universities from more than 12 countries in the Asia- Pacific region that included assisting in managing cultured species and developing capacity with applying fish husbandry, nutrition and modern genetic technologies to local aquaculture industries. Some of the recent projects that I managed and assisted in the implementation include: ‘Enhancement of freshwater prawn aquaculture in the Pacific: Assessing freshwater prawn stock quality and nutrition in Fiji’ and, ‘Assessment of the extent of hybrid introgression in farmed stocks of the GIFT Tilapia in the Pacific region, Genetic improvement of cultured tilapia and redclaw in Fiji and Australia’ etc..
I have supervised students, predominantly under-graduates and MSc candidates to completion. International recognition of my contribution to the development of aquaculture in Pacific island countries include invited presentations at international meetings, invitations to join international organizations. In 2010 and 2011 I was supported by a ‘Brain Gain” Fellowship by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia through the University of Malaya. In February 2012 I was invited and supported by ACIAR to present at 56th conference of The Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) in a mini symposia: ‘Food security in the South Pacific, PNG and East Timor’ in Fremantle, and in May 2012, at the World Aquaculture Society - the Australian Aquaculture Conference-‘ Indigenous and Pacific session’, Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Nandlal has also had the opportunity to contribute to and accomplished training of government staff, aquaculture industry personnel and aqua culturist.
My research outcomes have contributed to the development of giant freshwater and tilapia culture industry and wealth and economic development of many Pacific island communities.
I would like to undertake research project to learn more of the impacts of climate change on small-scale aquaculture farms in small island States.
