Project description:
Half +Half10,000 Acre Community Forest Project similar to Analog Forestry (a system which seeks analog ecosystem with architectural structures and ecological functions similar to original climax or sub climax vegetation), is an innovation based on small holder farmers initiatives to conserve and restore small forest patches ranging from ½ acre to 5 acres per household/farmer leaving a piece of land to regenerate naturally into a forest by its own which is also in line with REDD+, it is anticipated that through campaigns and sensitization, these small forest patches or piece of land left to regenerate into forests can make 10,000 acres of forest conserved in Mityana,Mubende,Kiboga &Gomba districts. This is not something government or any other agency can achieve even with law enforcement or other measures, and is driven by the fact that it is no longer feasible to conserve large tracts of forest only in the face of the rapidly growing... human population and competing economic priorities especially in Africa where land is becoming so scarce. This initiative lead to sustainable agriculture and food security, reduced soil erosion, stable rainfall pattern, stable income and alternative use of forest and Climate change adaptation and mitigation if replicated scaled up and out in other communities in Uganda, Africa and other developing countries where smallholder farming is still dominant.
Its main objective is:
To promote Half +Half 10,000 Acre Community Forest Project and to introduce Analog Forestry to the community and make farmers understand the value of forests and it’s ecological Functions in their livelihood and to combat climate change through adaptation and mitigation.
To have ten thousand acres of community forest standing on more than 1000 acres of land through reserving half an acre and more land for forest conservation, tree planting and regeneration purposes.
To give advice to the community members to plan and design farmland well for increased own ecological and increased food and nutrition security and economic benefits.
To sensitize each and every community member to get proper documents for his/her own land from the proper authorities in time rather than giving chance to the land grabbers to confiscate their land where they have been earning a living.
Impacts:
Forests and woodlands are critical for both human well-being and biodiversity in this region. They contribute to socio-economic development through trade in timber and non-timber forest products such as medicinal plants. They also contribute important environmental services such as the protection of water sources and carbon storage but it is being degraded and getting wiped out at a very high rate.
The vision of Half+Half 10,000 Acre Community Forest Project is to bridge the environment and development agendas in pursuit of a just world that values and conserves the forest goods and services on which people depend therefore the methodology is bring back to normal with time what has been destroyed. We need to partner and collaborate with people and institution who can support us to implement the project:comment and advice is welcome.
