Jim Jarvie

I work on urban resilience, climate change adaptation, natural resource management, and disaster response. I began my career as a tropical forest biologist as part of VSO in Indonesia. After a doctorate in plant systematics, I returned to Indonesia as a Harvard University post-doc, where I remained on staff leading field implementation of biodiversity programs. I moved on to working in a development context with NGOs and other agencies on natural resource management, with a focus on violence and deforestation following the fall of the Suharto regime. A long engagement with humanitarian and development agency Mercy Corps began in Sri Lanka immediately after the tsunami, where I was living at the time. After leading humanitarian response, I transitioned to developing a global portfolio of agency projects on climate change, environment, and energy. Significant effort went into understanding how to engage in urban environments. This led to extensive involvement with the Asian Climate Change Resilience Network, later becoming its director while based in Thailand. I returned to the UK where I consults and writes on the interface between the urbanisation risks and ecosystem erosion.
