Professor of Water Futures
I am professionally registered civil engineer with over 20 years experience in the water and sanitation sector. I have worked in both the development and research environments, with a specific focus on water and sanitation and more recently in the climate change adaptation sector. Before joining ISF, I worked for three years as a senior planning engineer with an Australian water utility, and before that with the Energy Research Centre at the University of Cape Town.
My PhD thesis examined the impact of climate change on water resource management in small towns. The thesis demonstrated an approach that could be adopted by small towns to develop their water adaptation response to climate change impacts that includes an assessment of existing climate variability responses. By drawing on a case study of a small town in South Africa, it was demonstrated that the consequence of climate change impacts on water resources is an economic issue when it comes to meeting projected water demand and ensuring access to basic water supplies.
I have assisted the water businesses of Melbourne to develop a more resilient water supply and demand strategy for the next 50 years but taking into consideration future uncertainty due to in part by climate change.
More recently, I have been working in Kiribati undertaking trainer of trainer work around indentifying the triggers and indicators of change for sustainable potable water supplies.
