IRI

The IRI was established as a cooperative agreement between NOAA’s Climate Program Office and Columbia University. It is part ofThe Earth Institute, Columbia University. IRI works in partnership with governments and organizations to solve real development and humanitarian problems. Partners give the context for IRI’s work. They help IRI target its research and products so that it is useful and usable. Partners participate throughout the process – from identifying the problem, to designing implementing and evaluating the project. With them IRI is able to explore, pilot, scale and sustain improvements in climate risk management and climate services.

Mission

The mission of the IRI is to enhance society’s capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. The IRI conducts this mission through strategic and applied research, education, capacity building, and by providing forecasts and information products with an emphasis on practical and verifiable utility and partnership.
