Associate Professor
Miriam Kalanda Joshua is an Associate Professor in Human Geography at the University of Malawi. Her research interests are in water governance, food security, climate change, natural hazards and disaster risk management, livelihoods, environmental and natural resources management, and indigenous knowledge systems. Miriam has vast expertise in environmental management and climate change related issues. She has been involved in implementing a number of research activities including Climate change and ecosystems management in Malawi and Tanzania (2021-2026); Assessing the role of formal institutions in ensuring access to drinking water for marginalized households in rural Malawi (2012-2020); Monitoring and Evaluation of Global Climate Change Alliance: Malawi Activities –European Union Funded Project (2015-2020); Afrint IV project ‘Equity and Institutions in Sustainable Agricultural Intensification in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia - DFID Funded Project (2015-2019); Participatory building of capacity for climate change adaptation in agricultural sector in Tanzania and Malawi – Rockefeller Foundation funded project (2012-2015) as well as implementing four and three year’s action research projects on strengthening capacity in agricultural adaptation to climate change. She is also one of the national climate change experts and dedicated member of African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) - a regional network of African Group of scientists/ experts in various disciplines providing technical support to African Negotiators in UNFCCC negotiations. She is a Principal investigator in research exploring the impact of Covid-19 on people’s livelihoods and access to services in Malawi (2020-2023) and is UNIMA Waternet Coordinator for Integrated Water Resources Management Master's Programme from 2019 to date. Miriam has also completed successfully about 20 consultancies for informed policies and interventions in the fields of environmental management and climate change. She also participates in national activities on water, climate change and disaster risk management organized by the government of Malawi as well as the civil society.
